WinXP Installation Tips

Following are tips for assembling a PC prior to installing the operating system.
- Disconnect the ZIP drive prior to installing the operating system. Since
it will hijack your drive letter assignment for the C drive. After the
operating system is installed you can reconnect it.
- Download BIOS updates for your Motherboard BIOS and install.
- If your
motherboard has integrated LAN, Audio and/or Video you should also obtain these
drivers from the manufactures web site.
Following are procedures for installing the WinXP operating system.
- Set BIOS to boot off of CD-ROM. If system does not support CD-ROM boot
download the boot disks from Microsoft web site. Boot the WinXP setup CD-ROM.
- Choose CUSTOM Network install when asked unless you intend to setup the
PC on a workgroup called "WORKGROUP".
- Once setup is complete create a new user account for the individual who will
be the Administrator. You can give this person Administrator rights. Administrator
will only show up until this new user is created. Best to do this right at
the start before you start installing additional software.
- Download and Install operating system Service Packs. Then install rest
of the updates on the Microsoft Windows Update site.
- Additional useful utilities to install are the Powertoys from Microsoft.
Especially the Tweak Utility which will give you an easy way to set the system up
for an automatic login, if desired.
If problems occur after setup the following are possible repair procedures.
- Run "SFC /scannow"
- Boot setup disk, select WinXP install, F8 to accept license, then
put an "R" next to the system installed on your partition.
