Area: 27834 km2 Capital: Bujumbura Administrative divisions: 16 provinces (Bubanza, Bujumbura, Bururi, Cankuzo, Cibitoke, Gitega, Karuzi, Kayanza, Kirundo, Makamba, Muramvya, Muyinga, Mwaro, Ngozi, Rutana, Ruyigi) Currency: Burundi-Franc Time Zone: MEZ + 1 Stunde Population: 6.6 million people Ethnic groups: 85% Hutu, 14% Tutsi, 1% Pygmies Languages: Kirundi (official), French (official), Swahili Religion: Christian 67% (mostly Roman Catholic), indigenous beliefs 23%, Muslim 10%. Recent history: Between 1993 and 2000, wide-spread, often intense ethnic violence between Hutu and Tutsi factions in Burundi created hundreds of thousands of refugees and left tens of thousands dead. Although some refugees have returned from neighboring countries, continued ethnic strife has forced many others to flee. Burundian troops, seeking to secure their borders, have intervened in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Tutsi controlled government enforced the regroupment of 330,000 Hutu into 53 so called "protection sites" around the capital Bujumbura over the past two years, leaving them without access to their homes and land and in extremely poor living conditions. The Arusha Peace Negotiations made little progress under the chairmanship of Julius Nyerere. Nelson Mandela became the new mediator after the death of Nyerere in 1999.

South America

Argentina - Argentina is triangular in shape and stretches c.2,300 mi (3,700 km) from its broad northern region near the Tropic of Capricorn to Tierra del Fuego, an island shared with Chile, in the south. On the northeast, Argentina fronts on the Río de la Plata (an estuary and one of the major waterways of the Western Hemisphere), which separates Argentina from S Uruguay; its tributaries also act as international boundariesthe Uruguay River, with W Uruguay and S Brazil, and the Paraná, Paraguay, and Pilcomayo rivers, with Paraguay. The northwest boundary with Bolivia lies in the Gran Chaco and the Andes Mts. The western boundary with Chile follows the crestline of the Andes. The Atlantic Ocean borders Argentina on the east; there, off S Argentina, are the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), and the South Georgia, South Sandwich, and South Orkney islands, all dependencies of Great Britain that are claimed by Argentina. Argentina also claims a sector of Antarctica. The climate of Argentina varies from subtropical in the north to cold and windswept in the south, with temperate and dry areas found throughout much of the country. Precipitation, lowest along the E Andean slopes, increases markedly N and E across Argentina. The chief rivers of Argentina are the Paraná with its tributary, the Salado; the Colorado River; the Río Negro; and the Chubut. Argentina may be divided into six geographical regionsthe Paraná Plateau, the Gran Chaco, the Pampa (see under pampas), the Monte, Patagonia, and the Andes Mts. The Paraná Plateau in the extreme northeast is an extension of the highlands of S Brazil. It is the wettest part of Argentina and has a dense forest cover; tobacco, timber, and yerba maté are the chief products there. The spectacular Iguaçu Falls are in a national park located at the point where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet. * The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001 * This category is for English language sites providing information about the people, places, arts, culture, businesses, services, and organizations specific to Argentina. Falkland Islands - The Falkland Islands Here in this category you will find English language web sites and pages containing a wealth of information about this disputed group of islands. The first recorded landing on the Falkland Islands occurred in 1690 by an English captain, John Strong. He named the Islands after the then First Lord of the Admiralty, Viscount Falkland. After years of varied settlements, Britain resumed occupation and asserted her full rights in the Falklands with a naval garrison at Port Louis in 1833. The British administration has been continuous and unbroken, apart from the 1982 Conflict, right up to the present day and many of the Islanders today are descended from the earliest settlers. Whatever views you have, whether Falklands or Malvinas, when you browse through this category you will find that the islanders have embraced Internet technology for presenting themselves and their views to the world. Here you will also find, amongst many other items of interest: presentations about indiginous wild-life, world class tourism, entertainment and culture that may well surprise you.
