Horticulture - Horticulture Includes professional commercial sites Amateur gardening is in Home:Gardens Horticulture as a science is in Science:Agriculutre and may later be moved to Science:Agriculture and Forestry:Horticulture Horticulture is the culture of gardens, both as a science and as a practice. Derived from the Anglo-Saxon gyrdan , to enclose, the garden is a relatively small area cultivated intensively to produce fruit plants, vegetables, and ornamentals. The scope of horticulture is expanded greatly in the 21st century to include among crop plants all fleshy edible fruits, green leaves and stems eaten as vegetables, and all ornamental crops with the possible exception of turfgrasses under some conditions involving production in large extensive areas. Comparison with other areas of plant science (agronomy, field crops, forestry, and range management) Agronomy Agronomy (including Field Crops and Soils) is the science of field crop production. Derived from the Old English feld akin to the Dutch veld field crops are produced in large open areas and less intensively than in gardens. Derived from the medieval northern European usage, field crops include sources of food carbohydrates and cellulose for people and animals. They include the cereal grains (wheat, rye, etc.), pastures (both grasses and legumes), and certain root crops such as the potato which was not introduced into cultivation in Europe until after the discovery of the New World. While we refer here to agronomy as a science including soil science and crop science, "field crops" is the best term to refer to the plants studied in agronomy, because essentially anything harvested is a crop. Forestry and Range Management The third area of applied plant science, forestry and range management includes plants (and animals) which grow in large ecosystems not usually cropped on an annual basis, including uncleared or partially cleared areas with mixed resources of plants and animals. Multiple uses of such areas are common, including outdoor recreation. Fisheries is sometimes considered part of forestry. Food plants: Horticulture, or Agronomy, or Forestry and Range? Virtually all crops producing fleshy edible fruits belong in horticulture as either fruit crops or vegetables. They include the traditional temperate berries (tomato), pepoes (cucurbits), hesperidia (citrus), drupes (stone crops such as peach), pomes (apples), and a wide variety of tropical fruits. Even crops with dry fruits such as legumes (garden pea) belong in horticulture when they are harvested and consumed in the fresh undehisced immature stage, whereas otherwise the dry fruits (e.g., common bean) belong in field crops when they are harvested dry as "grains." All crops producing fleshy edible leaves and stems (e.g., vegetable greens such as spinach) also belong in horticulture, except plants producing primarily carbohydrate in large areas (e.g., sugar crops such as sugarbeet and sugarcane) are field crops. Forage plants eaten by animals (e.g., pastures, paddocks, silage, green hay, and green chop) are normally part of agronomy, except when they are produced in large ecosystems they are considered part of range management. Terrestrial non-food plants: Horticulture, Agronomy, or Forestry and Range? Cultivated plants which are not food for people or animals can be classified in either horticulture or agronomy or forestry, depending on the intensity of cultivation, the family of plant, and historical precedent. Ornamental plants are always in horticulture except when they are produced extensively in large areas (turfgrass seed and sod, and highway and conservation grasses) in which case they are normally considered in agronomy not horticulture. However, plants usually native plants which are grown in preserves are part of forestry. Forestry also includes trees cut for lumber and pulp wood (as well as outdoor recreation management and wildlife management). Plants producing industrial products such as non-edible oils, resins, non-edible fibers, latexes, and dyes are often in agronomy, with exceptions. The more extensively produced crops such as crambe and flax (linseed oil is used both as a drying oil in paint and as an edible oil in some developing areas) are in agronomy. The more intensively produced crops such as Jojoba are in horticulture. Plants used for conservation such as embankment stabilization, restoration of damaged habitats, and wildflowers used along highways could be classified in either agronomy, horticulture, or forestry, depending on the situation. The grasses would normally belong in agronomy, the amenity plants in horticulture, and plants used in extensive areas, especially in forests, would normally belong in forestry. Aquatic non-food plants If a plant is an Embryophyte including Spermatopsida (seed plants: flowering plants, conifers, etc.) as well as hornworts and ferns then it is classified in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry according to the intensity of its cultivation. If a plant is an algae (including seagrasses) then it may not normally be included in field crops, horticulture, or forestry. Instead, the tendency is to include it in Science:Biology:Ecology .

The structure is to have the title show the company name and have the description demonstrate why your site belongs in a particular sub-category of Test and Measurement (meaning, write a couple of sentences describing the appropriate product line or lines). No advertising hype. The first word of your title should be your company name, the first word of the description should be the main product line or product lines you list on your site. Don't think that a long flowery, full of advertising hype, non-professional description will get your site listed any faster, it won't. All this means is I have to waste my time editing your description to fit ODP criteria. The "Test and Measurement" category includes listings for manufacturers, and distributors of test and measuring instruments, who's main product line or service consists of such things as electrical calibrators, references, standards, and sources, insulation resistance testers and megohmmeters, function generators, analog and digital multimeters, signal generators, pulse generators, magnetic test equipment, electro-optical measurement products, time domain reflectometers, radio test sets, speaker testers and/or spectrum analyzers. Industrial Goods and Services

Associations - This category is for industrial manufacturing associations. An association in this category is an organized body of manufacturing company representatives who have an interest, activity, or purpose in common.

Bearings

Cable and Wire - This main section is mainly for full line distributors of wire and cable products and accessories.

Calibration and Testing - Organizations providing independent testing, laboratory, calibration, and instrument repair services.

Casting, Molding, Machining - This category covers sites related to producing a multiplicity of standard and custom parts and components for a diversity of end users, usually (although not always necessarily) on a subcontracted basis. It includes associated supply and support companies and runs the gamut of providing castings through to the application of various finishes to end products. In effect, the essential feature is the use of machinery, rather than the manufacture of the equipment itself. Thus a lathe user can belong here, whereas the lathe manufacturer will be found -- and should be directed to -- a more logical Machinery and Tools category. Note: Companies indexed in the main category should offer either multiple or somewhat unique manufacturing capabilities. Otherwise, sites are distributed among a number of subcategories, each indicating a particular type of machining activity. Additional note: Just as lathe manufacturers aren't indexed in this category, so companies that manufacture end products from start to finish themselves are, more than likely, better directed elsewhere. Obvious examples would be appliance manufacturers and car makers, who each have categories of their own and, at best, merely -- somewhere along the way -- use the services and parts provided by the firms whose sites are listed within this Casting, Molding, Machining category.

Consultants - The Industrial Goods and Services Consultants category includes companies that provide operating advice and assistance to businesses and other organizations in areas of manufacturing operations improvement, production planning and control. Consulting services focused on specific industry sectors are listed in categories corresponding to those sectors (e.g. consultants focused on Automotive manufacturing operations).

Directories

Engineering - Engineering This category is a combination of informational sites and company listings for most major Engineering fields. (No companies are listed directly under Engineering, but are listed in their most appropriate subcategories of Engineering).

Factory Automation - The manufactures of products used to automate Factories and continuos flow processes including the integrators of automated material handling systems.

Fluid and Gas Control - Please try to add valves, hoses, and fittings sites for fluid handling equipment to the /Valves, Hoses, Fittings category and sites for fluid power (hydraulic and pneumatic) to the /Fluid Power Components category. Please submit your site to one of these subcategories, because it will be so placed in any cases.

Industrial Supply - Listings for industrial supply companies. Most manufacturers belong in Business/Industries/Manufacturing.

Machinery and Tools - This category serves as a collection point for a host of sites put together by individuals, companies, and organizations that make, sell, service, or are otherwise concerned with the machinery, equipment, tooling, accessories, and consumables used by a wide range of industrial manufacturers. The category breaks the sites into groups that relate to either a main type of equipment or a particular field of industrial operation. Many of these groups are further broken down into subcategories that each assemble sites that have something in common with one another. An important point about all the sites is their focus on the equipment used in manufacturing an end product or achieving an end result. This is quite different from concern about the raw material involved in the manufacturing process. Sites of that sort belong in the relevant Resources industry categories. Note: Although over 5000 sites are distributed among the numerous subcategories that make up this Machinery and Tools section of the Open Directory, a relatively small percentage of them are indexed in five "above the line" categories: Associations, Directories, Employment, Technical Services, and Used Machinery. The focus in each case is on a general or all encompassing application to users of machinery and tools rather than on a narrower relationship to a specific industry or manufacturing process. Additional note: Several dozen sites are indexed, too, below the list of subcategories on this page. They represent companies that feature a diversified or out-of-the-ordinary range of products or services and are therefore difficult -- if not impossible -- to include elsewhere. A few of them do, at first glance, appear to have a relationship to a given subcategory, but the diversification of their interests and activities suggests that they are more justifiably listed under this "catch-all" heading.

Materials - Materials are the raw stuff used in manufacturing and industry. Some examples are steel, fibers, glass, and chemicals.

News and Media - Online magazines, newsletters as well as websites from traditional journals with industry related content . Before submitting your site, please review the Guidelines for Submitting a Site .

Optics - This category is for listing COMPANIES, so please submit company sites, not product sites. The title of your site should reflect your company name, nothing more. Note that this is for companies who sell or resell high technology, high precision, optical equipment, such as precision lenses, mirrors, detection or imaging equipment, and prisms. There is a subcategory for industrial lasers and laser products. Please put your laser company site there. Laser entertainment (such as light shows) does not belong in this category. It belongs in a business or entertainment category. Companies selling low-tech products which can be purchased at a local general store probably is not appropriate for this category. This would include small He-Ne lasers for use as laser pointers, 3-D glasses, and light bulbs. A business category would be best in that case.

Packaging - Packaging companies Packaging equipment companies Packaging research firms Engineering pertaining to packaging

Services - General manufacturing services.
